Beginning stage sketches of an interior railing project including three different style possibilities based on an initial client meeting. These sketches are discussed and refined based on feedback from the client.
Once a direction is chosen we draw the design full-scale on plywood. This full-scale template is used to layout the forged elements of the railing as they are created. The template is also used to work out any remaining structural details.
Detail of the full-scale template.
The forged elements are laid out on the full-scale template for review. Refinements and adjustments are made as necessary.
Often with a complex project individual elements are broken out into separate smaller drawings so that the red-hot elements can be moved quickly from the fire and checked against the drawing.
Working at the coal forge, heating a scroll and leaf cluster.
A scroll cluster being heated in the coal forge. The metal cluster is heated to roughly 1600-1800 degrees and then pulled from the fire to be further refined.
